The extension of the runway is an important project for us and for the economic development of Speyer and its metropolitan region.

In times of universal globalisation, mobility is a decisive factor in the choice of business locations. Extension of the runway by 450m to a total length of 1,677 m is indispensable, especially in view of the safety requirements for modern business travel.

To reach distant destinations in Europe and the Middle East without time-consuming stopovers, which is an economic necessity for the Palatine region, aircraft must carry large quantities of fuel. This means a higher take-off weight and consequently a longer start distance.

With its present runway length of 1,226 m, the Speyer aerodrome falls short of meeting these requirements. It cannot fulfil the function of a commercial airport without adequate safety standards. Only an extended Speyer / Ludwigshafen aerodrome will offer location advantages to the regional industry, and positive arguments for establishing new businesses in its neighbourhood.

In addition to its significance for the regional economy, protection of the environment is an important consideration in this extension project.

All intrusions into nature are counterbalanced by appropriate measures in compensation areas. For instance, if trees must be felled, they are afforested somewhere else.

Where trees have to be lopped, they are still left standing with a height of 20 m.
Care is also taken to keep the skyline unspoilt.
